News from Severn Vale School

Lots of good news to report from Severn Vale School this month.  A number of students have sat their GCSE English and also Maths early this year and the results have been extremely encouraging.  Many have a further opportunity to raise their grades in the summer but all the signs are that we are heading for some record breaking results in August and that will be on top of all the other improvements that have been made in recent years.

We are relishing our work as part of the Quedgeley Learning Community (QLC).  We are learning from the expertise of primary colleagues and this is helping us refine the transition from Year 6 to Year 7.  It is already good but every aspect of school life needs to be outstanding.  Nothing but the best will do!  We are also busy planning the QLC Olympics, a week long festival of sport in June with a grand final being held at the University of Gloucestershire, as well as community activities on the day of the Quedgeley Show.

Schools need to be actively promoting strong sets of values. One example of this is reflected in the work the students do with charities.  Severn Vale School played a leading role in a fundraising effort right across Gloucestershire for the Royal British Legion.  In total, some £73,000 was raised, a wonderful achievement.

It is very rewarding to see 2012 going so well for the school and there will be more news next month.

Special Jubilee Request

Do you know anyone in our local community who was born in 1926, the same year as the Queen?  With the Jubilee coming up in June we would love to interview local residents who are the same age as Her Majesty.  We’re sure they have fascinating stories to tell and also fascinating memories about how our local community has grown and developed.

We’d love to publish the interviews and perhaps there should be a special tea party for everyone who took part …..

If you know anyone please contact Peter Rowland, Headteacher at Severn Vale School on 01452 720458.

Quedgeley Learning Community or QLC for short, is the name chosen for the partnership that has been set up between Severn Vale School (a newly converted academy) and its family of eight local primary schools:

Beech Green Primary

Field Court Infants

Field Court Juniors

Hardwicke Parochial Primary

Haresfield C of E Primary

Kingsway Primary

Longney C of E Primary

Meadowside Primary

We’re only five weeks old at the time of writing but already QLC is having an impact.

Our QLC Choir has been formed consisting of two students from each school.  Members of the choir vary in age from Year 2 up to Year 10 and they are sounding wonderful in rehearsal.  I’ve also heard mention a QLC generational choir which will include adults too, so watch this space.

We have formed a QLC Super School Parliament with two students from each school contributing.  At their first meeting they agreed a set of priorities.  Supporting the work of local charities was one clear favourite, as was combining to focus on Sustainability issues given that so many of the QLC schools have a strong interest in Eco issues.  At their very first meeting they also tackled their first challenge:  working with the Diocese of Gloucester to identify what qualities and skill young people feel the new vicar at St James’ Church should possess when he or she is appointed later in the year.

Some lovely writing has emerged from a QLC Literacy workshop involving gifted and talented students.  We are also planning a poetry workshop timed to coincide with Remembrance Day.  The plan includes laying a wreath at the war memorial in St James’ Church.

Arrangements are also being finalised for the QLC Launch being held at Severn Vale School.  For the first time ever all the teachers from our local schools will be gathered together under one roof, united by a common vision of seeing QLC really impact on the learning of young people and adults right across our community.  There is tremendous expertise here and out of the launch will emerge ideas which can be built into our plans for the future.

We intend keeping you regularly updated with further news of QLC.  We haven’t even mentioned the Quedgeley Olympics yet. Nor Radio QLC, which we hope to link to Severn FM.  QLC really does mean business!
